1903: First race is held at The Milwaukee Mile making it the oldest race track in the
world still in operation. William Jones won averaging 35 mph for the five mile race.
1907: A 24 hour endurance race is held at The Milwaukee Mile with the help of electric
lamps placed around the track at short intervals and white canvass behind the lights to reflect
light onto the track. Fred Leiser won with Bobby Drach driving relief, covering 1,195 miles at an
average of 49.79 mph. Leiser won again in 1908. The 24 hour event was cancelled in 1909 when
only two cars entered.
1912 (under previous venues): First race was the Vanderbilt Cup event run on October 2.
The latter three races were run on October 5. The Wisconsin Challenge Trophy Race (for non-stock
chassis, 161-230 cu. inch) and the Pabst Blue Ribbon Trophy Race (for non stock chassis, 231-300
cu. inch) were run concurrently. Then, the United States Grand Prize was run, a non-championship
event. Two time defending Grand Prize champion, David Bruce-Brown, was killed during practice.
1939: First race at The Milwaukee Mile to count for points towards the championship.
6/51: First year 100-mile event named after Rex Mays.
6/52: Johnny McDowell killed while qualifying when he's thrown from car in a rollover.
6/54: First race on track after being paved in May.
6/59: It took five years after the track was paved to break the one lap record set on dirt.
Thomson, the eventual winner, set the mark.
8/59: Race red flagged after 29 laps due to crash that killed Ed Elisian. Race restarted
one hour later.
6/64: The last roadster win at Milwaukee.
8/65: One of the most memorable events in Milwaukee history occurs. Foyt's car, a
Lotus-Ford, and crew fail to show up. Therefore, Foyt takes his upright dirt car that he won with
the day before at Springfield off the trailer, sets it up himself for pavement, and won the pole.
He led for 16 laps before falling behind Johncock for second place in the 200-miler.
6/68: Race red flagged after 2 laps due to crash that killed Ronnie Duman. Race restarted
33 minutes later.
6/69: Pollard involved in first lap wreck that eliminated ten cars. Pollard then relieved
his teammate, Greg Weld, after one lap to win the race.
8/70: Unser coasted to victory out of fuel. His margin of victory was over four laps.
6/72: Leonard wins by over four laps.
1983: Sneva was initially disqualified after his victory due to improper ground clearance
of his side pod's skirts. The ruling was reversed on appeal.
1991: The Andretti's sweep the podium with Michael in first, John in second, and Mario in
third. Jeff finished 11th.
1994: Race shortened from 200 laps due to rain.
1996: Qualifying rained out. Grid set with practice times.
1997: Track remeasured to be 1.032 miles in length.
2000: Race postponed from Sunday to Monday due to rain.
2001: Qualifying rained out. Grid set by point standings.
2003: Qualifying rained out. Grid set by practice times. First night race held at Milwaukee Mile for
Centennial celebration. Michel Jourdain, Jr. wins his first CART race.
2004: Ryan Hunter-Reay leads every lap from pole.
2005: Race shortened from 225 laps due to time limit.
2006: Race shortened from 225 laps due to time limit.
