It has just been announced that PJ Jones will be replaced
at Patrick Racing. Was Patrick fair to Jones in light of PJ having to deal with a Swift
chassis that had given others headaches and that his teammate is not driving the same chassis and
thus cannot help with feedback, or did Jones fail to live up to his expectations and should have
been let go?
PJ Jones' career in CART began as an AAR driver with Fangio,
when Gurney jumped from the failing IMSA series to CART. Both
of these guys never made much of an impression with open wheelers.
It's a bit surprising that PJ has been around so long. He
has been a troublesome backmarker (he took Zanardi out at Vancouver
in '96, and removed Dario from Portland in '97). Patrick and AAR
have given him a fair shot at finishing races on the same lap; it's
time to put another young American in the seat.

Newman/Hass is not using the same chassis as Patrick. They have made their own modifications.
PJ deserves another shot. The other drivers with the same equipment aren't doing any better.

PJ's inconsistency shows that he is not capable of giving the team good fedback on the car.
His good performances were just plain luck that the team got the set up right. While many
complain about the difficulty of the Swift, MA has consistently been at the front on all courses.
Robby Gordon is another one that can't get it right and has given up on the Swift ("we'll take it
back to the shop and cut it up"). Well I've got news for you Robby - your performance in a
Reynard won't be much better.
PJ might do better in the Reynard (Is it still a Frankenstein or have they completed the
transition to a complete 99?), but I don't see a long term future for him in CART. But what the
hell were they thinking with Magnussen? He has given us prior notice that he can't set up a car
either. (Penske and Stewart F1)
